Q and A
              about the new driving laws:

BACK TO  AKRON BACK TO CLEVELAND

Q. When does the new driving law take effect? In April 2007

A.  On July 1, 1998 the new graduated licensing law took  effect.   The law was then modified in 2007.

Q. What are the new regulations?

A.  To get your license under the new law you must complete the following:

  • complete 24 hours of classroom and 8 hours of driving instruction with a driving school
  • Receive 50 hours of practice with your parents or driving school (10 of which have to be done at night)
  • Hold your temporary for at least 6 months

The law also allows you to acquire a temporary at 15 1/2! So you can start your practice 6 months before you take your test for your license

Q.  I heard I will not be allowed to drive after 12 midnight  if I'm 16 or 17 and after 1am if I'm 18 is that true?

A.  Yes, but if you are accompanied by a parent or guardian you can drive after those hours.

Q. What if I have to work late on a weekend?

A.  The law has taken that into account and you can drive home from a school event or          work after 1am if necessary

Q.  What happens if I loose my temporary and I have to buy a new one and take the test   all over again, does the time I had the old one count toward my 6 month wait?

A.  Yes it does.  You will be given full credit for all the time you held your temp old or  new.

Q.  I was told that all temporaries issued after July 1, 1998 are good for one year, is         that true?

A.   It sure is.  All temporaries bought after July 1, 1998 are good for one year.

Q.  Can my brother who is 18 drive in the front seat with me while I drive with my              temporary?

A.   No, anyone who is driving next to you must be at least 21 years of age.

Q.  If I'm 16 years of age is it true that I can only have ONE passenger the car other than family members?

A.  Your correct.  Until you're 17 you can only have one non family member as a passenger.
